The scene

Nicodemus is a respected teacher in Israel. He has a lot to lose, so he comes to Jesus at night, when no one will see him. In this episode they sit together by lamplight and talk. Nicodemus brings his questions. Jesus answers plainly and gently, then offers him a place among the people following Him.

It's one of the quietest scenes in the first season. It's also one of the most moving. And out of that talk comes the verse a lot of us learned first.

The verse

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

John 3:16 (NIV)

Scripture sets these words in Jesus' night conversation with Nicodemus. It's easy to forget who heard them first. There was no crowd. Jesus spoke them to one man. In The Chosen, He says them to someone who came in the dark, still unsure, carrying honest questions.

Why it matters

Nicodemus didn't have it all figured out. He came anyway. The invitation in John 3:16 is open to "whoever believes in him," and that still includes anyone who shows up with questions. To FOLLOW is to follow Jesus. For a lot of us, that starts the way it did for Nicodemus, with one honest conversation.
